Legal Counsel – Maghreb (Algiers)

About the role

Unilever is seeking a Legal Counsel for the Maghreb region to provide comprehensive legal support across its FMCG operations in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. The role acts as a strategic business partner, ensuring compliance, managing risk and enabling sustainable growth while travelling up to 30% across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Provide proactive legal advice to business teams, local leadership and regional/global legal stakeholders on regulatory, operational, HR, digital, audit and investigation matters.
• Lead and coordinate legal support across Maghreb markets, ensuring alignment with global policies and corporate governance standards.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, define negotiation strategies and contribute to contract standardisation.
• Ensure compliance with internal policies, local legal requirements and support the Compliance and Business Integrity teams.
• Manage disputes, litigation and investigations, represent the company before courts and governmental agencies, and coordinate external counsel.
• Oversee corporate secretarial duties, shareholder meetings, filings and regulatory engagements, including GAFI requirements.
• Act as Data Privacy Officer, ensuring compliance with data protection laws and implementing risk‑mitigation strategies.
• Deliver legal training, raise awareness of legal risks and support commercial and marketing compliance, including IP protection.

Required profile

• Strategic legal partner with experience supporting FMCG operations across multiple jurisdictions.
• Strong knowledge of Maghreb regulatory, corporate governance and data‑privacy frameworks.
• Ability to travel up to 30% within the region and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
