Psychiatrist - Migration Field (On-Call Work)

About the role

The International Organization for Migration seeks a qualified psychiatrist to support the mental health of migrants arriving in Algiers. Working under the Chief of Mission and the Migration and Health Physician, the consultant will deliver assessments, crisis care, and therapeutic interventions, including on‑call duties for emergencies.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct psychiatric assessments and screenings for newly arrived migrants, documenting diagnoses and follow‑up needs.
• Provide immediate crisis intervention, risk assessment, and stabilization for individuals in acute distress.
• Deliver individual and group therapy addressing trauma, anxiety, depression, and adjustment challenges.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement culturally sensitive care plans.
• Train and mentor healthcare staff on mental‑health identification, trauma‑informed care, and best practices.
• Maintain accurate medical records and prepare regular reports on psychiatric activities and outcomes.
• Participate in on‑call rotations to offer urgent psychiatric consultations outside regular hours.

Required profile

• Medical degree with specialization in psychiatry and a valid license to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Experience in migration health, refugee mental health, or comparable settings is preferred.
• Fluency in English and French (oral and written); working knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.
• Strong knowledge of trauma‑informed care, cultural psychiatry, and cross‑cultural communication.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment while demonstrating resilience and empathy.
