Legal Counsel – Maghreb (FMCG)

About the role

We are seeking a Legal Counsel for the Maghreb region to provide comprehensive legal support to Unilever’s FMCG operations across Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. Based in Algiers with frequent travel to Oran and other Maghreb markets, you will act as a strategic business partner, ensuring compliance, managing risk and enabling sustainable growth.

Key responsibilities

• Provide proactive legal advice to business teams, local leadership and regional/global legal stakeholders on regulatory, operational, HR, digital, audit and investigation matters.
• Lead and coordinate legal support across Maghreb markets, ensuring alignment with global legal policies and corporate governance standards.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, define negotiation strategies and contribute to contract standardisation.
• Ensure adherence to internal policies, local legal requirements and develop legal policies and guidelines in partnership with Compliance and Business Integrity teams.
• Manage disputes, litigation and investigations, represent the company before courts, governmental agencies and tribunals, and oversee external counsel performance.
• Handle corporate secretarial duties, shareholder meetings, filings and regulatory engagements, including GAFI requirements.
• Act as Data Privacy Officer, ensuring compliance with data protection laws and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
• Deliver legal training, raise awareness of legal risks and support commercial and marketing compliance, including IP protection and brand reputation.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with experience in corporate governance, regulatory matters, contracts, compliance, litigation and data privacy.
• Demonstrated ability to work across multiple Maghreb jurisdictions (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania).
• Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time within the region.
• Full‑time, onsite availability in Algiers, reporting to the General Counsel – North Africa, Levant & Iraq.
