Protection Intern – Translation

About the role

UNHCR is offering a full‑time internship with its Protection Unit in Algiers, Algeria. The intern will support the team by interpreting and translating communications between UNHCR staff and asylum‑seekers or refugees, and will assist in protection‑related activities.

Key responsibilities

• Interpret and translate during one‑to‑one interviews and multilateral meetings.
• Support the identification and documentation of Persons with Specific Needs (PwSN) and their protection risks.
• Assist in providing general protection counselling to PwSN, asylum‑seekers and refugees.
• Contribute to Refugee Status Determination and resettlement procedures.
• Conduct Country of Origin Information (COI) research and prepare related reports.

Required profile

• Current enrolment in or recent completion of a Licence, Master or equivalent degree.
• Strong language proficiency in Arabic, French and English.
• Interest in humanitarian protection and refugee issues.
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment and handle confidential information.

Required skills

• Translation and interpretation skills.
• Basic research abilities for COI gathering.
• Familiarity with UNHCR protection standards and procedures.
