Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Broco is building the financial infrastructure for francophone Africa and is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own and evolve the backend services that power its consumer, driver, and merchant applications. The role is based in Algiers and reports to the Head of Engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and scale robust backend APIs and services for Broco’s three connected apps.
• Collaborate with the Lead Payments Engineer to implement secure financial features, ledger operations, and real‑time commission splits.
• Integrate third‑party services such as local banking APIs, SMS gateways, and geolocation/routing providers.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well‑tested code while participating in code reviews.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and optimise database queries and overall system performance to ensure low latency and high availability.
• Define API contracts with product and mobile teams to enable seamless feature integration.

Required profile

• 5+ years of proven experience as a Backend Engineer in a fast‑paced tech environment.
• Strong hands‑on experience with relational databases, complex schema design, and query optimisation.
• Demonstrated ability to build production‑grade backend systems used by real customers.
• Professional proficiency in English.
